Interns

At Kenosis, we have proudly served as a clinical training center for universities across Indiana and throughout the United States for nearly three decades as an extension of our commitment to strengthening the mental health field while serving a broader community.

Each year, we accept a hand-selected graduate student interns, as well as a limited number of non-clinical undergraduate students. Our collaborative, cohort-style placement model fosters meaningful personal and professional growth, creating a rich learning environment grounded in mentorship and shared experience.

Graduate interns are invaluable members of the Kenosis community. They play an important role in extending services to individuals and families in need, particularly those who may not otherwise be able to afford counseling services.

Internships at Kenosis

There are several essential things to know about a placement at Kenosis for graduate students. Kenosis is a community-based private practice that provides outpatient mental health counseling services. Therefore, we only accept longer-term placements of 8 to 12 months or more; anything shorter can be too disruptive for clients in an outpatient setting. Graduate students often complete their practicum with us and then continue directly into back-to-back internships.

Of equal importance, this internship is designed to hone and deepen clinical skills, rather than serve as an introduction to the field. Our selection process places strong emphasis on applicants who bring prior life experience and/or previous work in the mental health field. We are fortunate to have a full complement of staff, many of whom previously completed their own internships at Kenosis.

For more information about the breadth of our services, we invite you to explore our website and read through our associates’ biographies and clinical specialty areas.

Graduate interns work with a small caseload of clients at Kenosis two days per week, while also serving in a parochial school one day per week, providing supportive counseling services. Additionally, Kenosis is actively involved with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), offering interns opportunities to attend trainings and begin facilitating a variety of AFSP community programs.

Unlike many internships that focus on a single area, Kenosis provides a well-rounded experience that allows interns to explore multiple aspects of the field. I had the opportunity to shadow highly skilled therapists working with diverse populations, including individuals experiencing trauma, personality disorders, and addictions. At my own pace, I was able to build a caseload that enabled me to develop and strengthen my clinical skills in a supportive environment. The comprehensive and supportive experience at Kenosis played a meaningful role in my growth as a clinician and helped position me well as I entered the workforce.

Former Kenosis Intern

My time at Kenosis has been one of great learning experiences and personal growth. Working at Kenosis has given me the opportunity to better understand others and collaborate with intelligent and hardworking individuals. Finding our own clients as interns presented some difficulty, but we were still given the opportunity to provide counseling to youths in the surrounding area through various parochial school systems. Christine has given some of the best advice and resources that I will continue to use in my professional career from now into the future. It was a pleasant experience that felt more like a family business than a mental health center.
